Tarot of the Week — July 1 – July 7
The Death card is one of the most commonly known of all the Tarot cards.
It has been used in movies, television, and books as an omen of and associated with things to come.
The Death card can certainly be viewed this way. I have found, in my personal experience, that Death coming up in a spread is not always a bad thing.
Archetype of the Death Card
In the Major Arcana the archetypal picture of Death is not unlike the physical experience of Death.
One thing that is important to point out here is that Death does not mean a physical Death.
The best way to explain the Death card in the Tarot is that it represents a transformation or change that is so profound that there is no going back to the way things were before.
Consider a physical death. It is a transition from one reality to another. You can call it heaven, the spirit world, the astral plane, or movement onto a new life.
However you put it, death itself represents a profound shift or change, and of course there is no going back to the way things were before.
The Death Card Meaning
The Death card represents this type of a shift, one that there is no going back from once the transition has taken place.
Death can represent a transition from one job to another, or indicate that a relationship dynamic has run its course. Again, Death is not always a bad card.
Like physical death, the Death card can present itself as something scary. When an individual fears physical death, their transition can often times become very difficult.
They resist the change, and through this resistance they suffer. However, there are others that die with a level of dignity and grace that even if they are experiencing a tremendous amount of pain, they do not suffer through the process.
This is true with Death showing up in a reading. When the Death card comes up, individuals who are resistant to change can often times suffer through the transformation that is taking place. When individuals soften themselves to the change, and allow for the transition to happen naturally they are less likely to suffer through the process.
Death Card For Today
The Death card comes up today, because there are many changes happening in society and in our world today. This is a season of Death, but with Death comes resurrection and new life.
This is happening not only on a global scale, but in our personal lives as well. Spirit is shifting people from one place to another, and relational dynamics are changing. This is certainly not a time for fear, but rather a time for us to stand up in love and understanding.
Things may be changing rapidly, and it is a time for us to wake up and become more compassionate and caring towards ourselves and others that have been placed in our lives.
This week’s card comes from the Silver Witchcraft Tarot, by Barbara Moore and Franco Rivolli.
Expressing the wisdom and magic of the ages through Luna’s ethereal light, the Silver Witchcraft Tarot combines the rich tradition of the Rider-Waite tarot with modern Pagan symbolism, creating a unique and beautiful reading experience.
Weaving the phases of the moon and the Pagan holidays into each suit, this exquisite deck offers knowledge of a material, emotional, and spiritual nature, whispering sagely into the ear of all who will listen.
Card edges feature a beautiful silver foil finish.
