Tarot Card of the Week: Seven of Swords

Seven of Swords

Tarot Card of the Week: April 25 – May 1, 2015

Seven of Swords

With five planets in retrograde motion by the end of this week — for the first time in over 10 years — you will need to give some serious thought to everything you say and communicate to others.

You may even want to keep your thoughts to yourself. At least until you’ve got a good handle on them and know where you stand. You want to be clear on what you need to withhold and what you may want to share with others, long before you speak.

Remember though that retrogrades don’t only refer to retracing your steps. They also require you to turn inward and evaluate your thoughts from a more personal perspective, and because of this you don’t want to discount the ideas that come to you during this time.

The Seven of Swords — like all Sevens — requires you to weigh the different aspects of a complicated situation, and arrive at a solution that causes the least amount of distress.

It can refer to a moral dilemma or one with no easy answer, such as a decision that favors the head over the heart. But it also involves strategy, planning and cunning.

What do you think the man in this card — from the Druidcraft Tarot — is writing? He’s clearly deep in thought and something is weighing heavily on his mind. Perhaps he’s drafting a treaty or agreement that he doesn’t expect to be well received. Or maybe he’s re-evaluating an earlier decision and struggling with ways to amend it.

Whatever it is, he’s deep in thought and seems to be almost painfully aware of the implications of whatever solution he arrives at. Notice that his swords are stacked against one another, an indication that he may be at cross-purposes with those he’s communicating with.

This is an important consideration with the Seven of Swords. There are elements of trickery and deception shown in most versions of this card. And there is always the risk that your actions — no matter how well-meaning or honorable — will be met with resistance from others.

But here the focus is more on deep thought, weighty decisions, and potentially troubling repercussions. You don’t want to underestimate the influence of these 5 retrograde planets (with Mercury turning R on the 28th) leading to misunderstandings and miscommunications this week.

Take some time to think before you speak, as you may not have all of the information before you that can help you make a proper assessment. And as the Seven of Swords is also associated with suspicion and distrust, you want to make sure you’re not reading into things that just aren’t there.

druidcraft-setThis week’s card — Seven of Swords — comes from the Druid Craft Tarot by Philip Carr-GommStephanie Carr-Gomm and Will Worthington.

This deck represents the Celtic and Druid tradition and emphasises a connection with the natural world containing vibrantly colored life-like images and lush landscaping, megalithic structures and wise druids. This deck is not just for those who follow a Druid path, but for anyone who connects with nature. In ancient times Druids were considered to be philosophers, counsellors and alchemists. Druids are always learning, seeking the souls truth and seeking balance!

The Druidcraft Tarot is published by St. Martin’s Press and is also available for iPhone/iPad and Android devices through the Fool’s Dog website.
