Tarot Card of the Week: Ten of Wands

Mary El Tarot

Ten of Wands

Tarot Card of the Week: May 1 – May 7, 2017

Ten of Wands

You may have to muster up the strength, determination and fortitude this week to do what must be done, even if the task before you seems daunting and overwhelming.

The Ten of Wands — this version from the stunning Mary-el Tarot — is all about rising to the occasion and taking care of business, no matter how difficult or arduous that may be. It’s about stepping up to the plate and shouldering responsibilities — or like the figure in this card, moving through hell or high water to get the job done.

What do you think would happen if this man and his horse were to stop right  now where they are? They’d be consumed by the flames that are already engulfing them. They’d surely perish on the spot.

The idea here seems to be that once the task is started there’s no turning back. The rider pledges his commitment (notice his hand held over his heart) and the horse gathers speed.

He may have taken on more than he thinks he can handle, but he’s not going to throw in the towel. This is the essence of the Ten of Wands. Upholding your responsibilities may be more than you bargained for, but that doesn’t excuse you from doing them.

Tarot Card of the Week: Nine of Pentacles

nine of pentaclesTarot Card of the Week:  April 24 – April 30, 2017

Nine of Pentacles

Nine of Pentacles, the card of the week, comes from one of my favorite decks, the Deviant Moon Tarot by Patrick Valenza.

The deck was given to me as a gift. At first look of the box, I wasn’t sure I would like it but felt a pull to open it and now I use it a lot in my readings.

If you should be lucky enough to have the Nine of Pentacles come up in the present or future of your reading, it can mean something good in a monetary or material situation is coming your way.

Looking at the picture on the card, you see an independent and confident woman taking a walk with her little pet. There are pentacles dropping down around her indicating good things are coming to her.

The Nine of Pentacles represents The Lord of Material Gain, the element of Earth, the direction of North and the Season is Winter. The Zodiac signs are Taurus, Capricorn and Virgo. Dark grapes are the herbal associated with the nine of pentacles. Dark grapes are good for your blood, high in iron and the leaves are often used in astringents. This card usually signifies monetary / material gains. It can come from unexpected sources like an inheritance, winnings, settlements or monetary gifts.

Tarot Card of the Week: King of Swords

King of Swords

Tarot Card of the Week: April 10 – April 16, 2017

King of Swords

There is strength in words this week, both written and spoken. The King of Swords has a very quick mind. He is intellectual, clever and in a state of activity.

This week you may find that you are constantly on the go, and it won’t be because of the full moon energy. You have so many things to take care of that you don’t get a chance to sit down. As soon as one thing I finished something else pops up to take your attention.

As can be seen from this image in the Connolly Tarot’s version of the card, you have the capacity, imagination and intellect to see your ideas through but you may find there are so many things happening at once that you overlook something.

A list may help with this as you seem to be so inundated that what you miss is something that is needed and shouldn’t be forgotten. If you keep in mind that Mercury has just turned retrograde, on the April 10th, then you get the idea of what you are up against.

So much to do, so little time to do it in and all the while you are fighting against communication mix ups.

Tarot Card of the Week: Six of Cups

Six of Cups

Tarot Card of the Week: April 3 – April 9, 2017

Six of Cups

With Venus retrograding back into Pisces this week, dreams of yesterday and the past may be with you, as you find yourself lost in nostalgia and of times gone by.

An old friend or lover may come back into your life and reconnect with you.  Alternately you may feel the urge to reach out and touch someone from your past.

The Six of Cups — this version from Charissa Drengsen’s Steampunk Tarot — speaks of memories from the past being triggered today. Possibly by an event — a song that reminds you of days gone by, a scene from your childhood, or a scent that comes wafting back and conjures up feelings of nostalgia.

Fun times and playfulness abound for you, and children may figure prominently for you with thoughts of your own childhood being triggered by their presence.

You will feel light hearted as if you don’t need to worry about anything and in doing so you can throw from you worries that have been burdening you lately.

Tarot Card of the Week: Knight of Pentacles

Knight of Pentacles

Tarot Card of the Week: March 27 – April 2, 2017

Knight of Pentacles

This week should see you taking a more serious look at where you’re heading, with respect to your career, your professional goals, your education, your finances and your “brand.”

The Knight of Pentacles is generally all about taking things slow and steady with a keen eye on the future and the discipline to keep “plodding along” as you move toward your destiny.

As with all the Court cards, this can be someone presently in your life (or coming in) or it can represent a frame of mind that’s necessary for you adopt right now.

Don’t make the mistake though of focusing too much on the nuts and bolts of achieving success. If there’s any negative aspect that can be associated with this card it’s usually the dearth of inspiration that can lead to getting stuck in a rut of tedium and routine.

But this Knight of Pentacles doesn’t appear to be lacking in inspiration at all. We see him pausing at the onset of a vibrant and colorful path, reaching up to the heavens. Is he praying for guidance or expressing his gratitude?

Tarot Card of the Week: Inner Strength

Strength – The Journey of Inner Strength

This week, you might need to use your courage and inner strength to face something unpleasant, or you needed to face your fears and not let your fears devour you, or you needed to face someone who thought they could push you around.

You are the Hero, the Strength associated with a continuous cycle of change and the seventy-eight passageways of growth that will open up and lead you to explore new opportunities.

Tarot Card of the Week: Five of Cups

Five of Cups

Tarot Card of the Week: March 6 – March 12, 2017

Five of Cups

If you are experiencing feelings of loneliness and isolation this week, you might want to ask yourself whether you’re seeing the full picture.

The Five of Cups is often tied to feelings of disappointment and regret. You may be feeling shut out at time when you most needed to be let in; rejected at a time when you most wanted to feel included.

There may be some anger here as well, as in feeling duped in some way or betrayed. But in this version — from Cathy McClelland’s gorgeous Star Tarot — the emphasis is more on what has been lost than on what can be gained.

The woman in this card focuses on the three cups spilled at her feet rather than the two that are still left and are overflowing with symbols of happiness and joy.

She can’t even see them as she’s so busy protecting herself from the elements (the rain and storm clouds brewing behind her) and focusing on what she’s lost.

Tarot Card of the Week: Three of Swords

Chinese Tarot - Three of Swords

Tarot Card of the Week: Feb 27 – Mar 5, 2017

Three of Swords

This may be a high energy and potentially volatile week. Emotions can be difficult to contain — particularly the more aggressive emotions, like anger, impatience and indignation.

You want to be on your toes, especially where relationships are concerned as you may have to deflect a few daggers that come your way.

The Three of Swords — this version from the gorgeous Chinese Tarot — is often seen as pain and heartache, but this version veers so significantly from traditional imagery that it becomes a welcome and refreshing change.

You may not be particularly happy every moment of every day. You may still feel the sting of rejection or love lost.

But as you can see from the figure in in this card, it’s more about stopping pain in its tracks than it is about allowing it to cut you to your deepest core.

The young warrior in this card is a whirlwind of action and energy. She sees the sword coming at her and acts with deftness and precision. She wields two swords of her own and uses them to block the third one, thus minimizing the damage done.

Tarot Card of the Week: Two of Wands

two of wands

Tarot Card of the Week: Feb 20 – Feb 26, 2017

Two of Wands

This week ends with a new Moon solar eclipse, as seen in the image of this card. But it’s the days leading up to it you most want to think about. The Two of Wands — like all Twos — refers to taking the spark of an idea (seen in the Aces) and forming it into a tangible, working plan.

This requires looking at it from all angles — weighing the pros and cons, evaluating time and energy, separating the wheat from the chaff and so on. This is beautifully represented in the imagery depicted on this version of the card.

In this version of the card — from Nathalie Hertz’s beautiful Fantastical Tarot — we see two leopards, one dark and one light, each standing watch by their own ornate pillars. The dark leopard is an exact mirror image of the light.

Their sleek bodies curve toward one another and become “one,” reminding us of the power of uniting opposing forces to make one stronger entity. The Sun shines high in the sky between them.

The key here is balance: you won’t be able to make something happen without careful consideration and planning. And all the planning in the world won’t cause your ideas to materialize without putting in the effort.

Tarot Card of the Week: Queen of Wands

Tarot of Trees Banner

Tarot Card of the Week: Jan 23 – Jan 29, 2017

Queen of Wands

This is going to be good week for standing out in a crowd and showcasing your many talents.

Whether you’re trying to make an impression at work or are hoping to leave your mark on the world in other ways, you should have no problem making your presence known.

The Queen of Wands — this version from Dana Driscoll’s Tarot of Trees — is warm, vibrant, confident and creative. She knows how to lead with her heart and to garner the respect of others.

She embodies the feminine or yin aspects of Fire (wands) energy: warmth, enthusiasm, energy and drive. She’s regal and majestic; dynamic and refined; confident and authoritative. She’s creative, expressive and passionate. She’s also very worldly and knowledgeable.

She may be someone in your life, an event or a part of yourself. She may be a supervisor, a parent, a friend or even some facet of yourself that has long been dormant.

Tarot Card of the Week: Knight of Swords

Tarot Card of the Week: Jan 16, 2017 – Jan 22, 2017

Knight of Swords

This week you want to be on your toes and prepared for whatever opportunities — or peril — that comes your way.

The Knight of Swords — this version from the gorgeous Love and Mystery Tarot — is sharp, focused and purposeful, aware of his (or her) environment and quick to act if need be.

In traditional Rider Waite type decks the Knight of Swords is literally a knight in shining armor, charging ahead into battle or to rescue his fair maiden.

But here we have a young hipster-soldier girl standing watch under a bird-filled sky. She herself resembles a bright and colorful bird, from her hair to her coloring to her clothing to her complete immersion in the scene before her.

But these birds aren’t flying south for the winter: they’re circling above her in what could be a menacing formation. She keeps her sword ready but holds it behind her until she knows for sure.

The Knight of Swords often delivers news. Sometimes it’s good news and sometimes it’s not. But like the young warrior in our card, your main objective should be to stay alert and be prepared to act quickly and decisively either way.

Tarot Card of the Week: Ace of Coins

ace of coins

Tarot Card of the Week: Jan 9, 2017 – Jan 15, 2017

Ace of Coins

You know exactly what you are doing this week and will not be swayed by luck or chance.

The figure in this image — the Ace of Coins from the Chinese Tarot — holds an I Ching coin which is used for divination purposes; however there are no question marks surrounding what you need to next to proceed and you do not need any divination tools to tell you what needs to be done.

You are already packed and ready to go on a new venture and are ready for whatever comes your way.

If there is a new venture you have been wanting to start do not delay. You know what you need to do next and the energy in the red blossoms clinging to the tree despite the signs of a strong wind only spur you on to take your first step forward into the unknown… or is it the known?

With Mercury now in direct motion and preparing to move back into Capricorn, there is a lot of stability and security around you. This means you will not be second guessing what is coming next. My money would be on you knowing exactly what is coming next and where it is coming from.
