Tarot Card of the Week: August 17 – August 23

Queen of Swords

One of the most collectible and celebrated artists of the art deco movement, Alphonse Maria Mucha (24 July 1860 – 14 July 1939) was a Czech Art Nouveau painter and decorative artist.

He was well-known for his images of women. He produced famous advertisements, designs, illustrations and paintings and was known for capturing the spirit of the moment in his art.

Much of his art is displayed in the Tarot Mucha deck.

Mucha insisted that art was about conveying a spiritual message, so showcasing his art on a tarot deck is a perfect tribute to what he stood for.

Interestingly the Art Nouveau movement, and the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot deck were at the height of their popularity.

This deck follows the traditional Rider-Waite-Smith, with ethereal images of Alphonse Mucha.

He was catapulted to fame when he was commissioned to create posters for the famous actress Sarah Bernhardt.
